Art | David Hockney's Landscapes

I’ve been absolutely floored by this amazing book I found at my local library. It is a catalog of a huge show (which sadly closed in April) at the Royal Academy in London by one of my favorite artists,  David Hockney.  Watch this video of Mr. Hockney talking about his work along with some video footage of the installation. Apparently Hockney created all this work specifically for this show and it is stunning. The first thing that struck me were the colors. He brings these landscapes alive with purples, greens and everything in between. Everything looks enchanted and magical. The compositions are so dynamic, you are thrown right into the paintings. And the tension between a sort of slapdash freedom and a tight restraint make these completely masterful. Also in the book are photo collages which are interesting as well. I only wish I could have seen these paintings in person, as they are gigantic and were created to fit the rooms of the Royal Academy.
