Introduction:
Adding adornment to a surface is one of the oldest forms of artistic expression dating back thousands of years starting with carvings on cave walls to paintings on clay pottery. As history progressed, the advent of weaving brought another aspect of decoration to the body and the home through textiles. Color and pattern began to take on meaning representing social rank, beliefs, and heritage.Much like the past, surface design today is still used as a form of expression defining age groups, taste levels, and gender. In the retail market, patterns add value to a product transforming the mundane into something lust-worthy. Take the Marimekko poppy for instance. This iconic design commands a price on every object it touches. Other designers, like Eley Kishimoto, use their unique prints to create a distinct and recognizable look.
In the last few years, surface design has become a subject of much interest with new books and blogs appearing at a steady rate. We receive hundreds of inquiries from students, graphic designers, illustrators, and artists who want to be professional print designers but do not quite know where to start. Although prints are everywhere, the industry operates behind the scenes with sales occurring through private appointments, commissions, and at trade shows. There are no back alley deals but knowing how to operate in this opaque world does take some skill. Since starting our print studio four years ago, we have learned the ins and outs of this industry — from trend research to design to client relations — and we want to share our experience with you. With DIY pattern design guides, a thorough break-down of how the print industry operates, and loads of helpful resources, this publication provides a wealth of information and inspiration for the burgeoning surface designer. By no means complete, we aim to offer a broad overview of the field and write from our own experience working in the U.S. market. Use this as a starting point from which you can explore, experiment, and grow your skills, and ultimately, find the niche that is right for you.
____________________
When the two of us met back in 2007, we were both designing patterns but primarily supporting ourselves through freelance graphic design projects. Frustrated by the limitations of graphic design, the world of surface design appeared to hold many more possibilities for creative growth. We were ready to work for ourselves and took the plunge by starting our own studio. The process of developing Pattern People has been full of challenges and rewards which have forced us to grow tremendously as designers and entrepreneurs. Somehow, despite designing hundreds of prints, we are still as excited by the creative possibilities of surface design as we were in the beginning. We have learned to cultivate our creativity and to stretch our imaginations within the constraints of commercial design. Along the way we have also realized it is possible to sell our work while still maintaining artistic integrity.
We hope our insight into the world of surface design may inspire and educate others to pursue their own pattern career. Enjoy!Claudia & Jessie
