The Spring 2014 womens runway shows have begun, ushering in a season of new trends. We’re already seeing themes unfold as the New York shows continue to roll out collection after collection. Our first sightings include an update for the stripe which appears chopped or inlaid. Although inspired by the Mod era, Jonathan Smikhai’s latest designs have a decidedly Constructivist feel as lines are cut and collaged to wrap the body. Meanwhile, Louise Goldin inlays distorted, pixelated photography into linear shapes applied to tennis inspired garments for a sporty feel. Her approach to lace has a Modernist look reminiscent of Jean Arp’s organic blobs or the more graphic pattern interpretation by Wiener Werkstätte textile designer, Dagobert Peche.
